Here is one of our favorite old-time homemade chicken noodle soup recipes:

Ingredients:

Whole organic chicken

2 parsnips, sliced diagonally

2 turnips, sliced diagonally

2-3 carrots, sliced diagonally

2 celery stalks, sliced diagonally

1 medium onion, chopped

3 cloves of garlic, minced

Salt (taste for desired amount)

Pepper (taste for desired amount)

Handful of fresh dill

2 bay leaves

2 fresh thyme sprigs

Handful of fresh parsley

Whole grain rice or egg noodle (cooked separately from soup)

Directions:

First, cut and separate your whole organic chicken (click here to learn how). Then, place the chicken pieces (including the back and neck bones, but be sure to remove most of the ribs and smaller bones) into a large stock pot, then add enough cold water to cover the chicken by 2 inches. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a medium-low simmer for about 20 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and simmer partially covered for about 2 -3 hours. When the soup is about ready to serve, cook your noodles or rice separately in a medium saucepan. Combine desired amount of soup and rice/noodles into bowl and enjoy!

Summer’s Over! Time for Natural Cold and Flu Prevention and Treatment

September 13th, 2013

It’s that time of year when we put our bathing suits away and start bringing out the scarfs and jackets. These seasonal changes bring greater variations in the weather that cause the body’s natural defenses to be in flux. Thus it’s time to build up the immune system before the super bugs start to develop and take hold of us.

The natural way to avoid colds and flu starts with eating healthy, exercising, getting plenty of rest and drinking lots of water to keep the body functioning optimally. Try to stay on a schedule, keep healthy snacks handy and nourish all aspects of yourself. It turns out, prevention can go a long way to avoiding ever getting sick.

However, as the Fall “back to school” season and holiday mode starts to kick in, the obvious is not always as practical as we’d like. Of theses daily habits, rest is paramount because when we are tired and run down is when these opportunistic germs take hold! (#18 Sleep will aid a restful nights sleep) It’s also very important to schedule your day to incorporate “downtime” allowing the body and nerves to unwind. This keeps stress levels at bay will help adrenal glands from working overtime, which depletes the immune system’s ability to defend against germs.   (#11 De-Stress helps keep anxiety at bay!)
