The Cary Diaries: Cary Talks “Stress” at Texas Children’s Healthplan

May 15th, 2014

In honor of Nurses’ Week, I made a trip to speak at the Texas Children’s Healthplan’s Nurses’ Appreciation Day event. As expected, nurses regularly get caught up in stressful situations while caring for their patients. They rarely have time to stop and realize how this stress can wreak havoc on many of their bodily systems.

Stress can cause increased blood pressure and heart rate, digestive issues, muscular tension, rapid breathing, adrenal burn out, Mobdro and even compromise the immune system!

We discussed numerous methods for controlling stress:

• Take daily breaks

• Incorporate “quieting” rituals into daily routines

• Simple stretching exercises

• Breathing exercises

• Create statements of intention

• Essential oils

• Maintain a healthy and well balanced diet

• Schedule quiet time

• Bathing rituals

All of these approaches help to slow down the cascade of intense adrenaline rushes that occur under extreme stress and tension.

In addition to speaking at the nurse’s appreciation day event, I was fortunate enough to be part of the educators’ meeting for the labor and delivery department at the Texas Children’s Hospital’s Pavilion for Women. I spoke with a team of 6 women who direct the education for the childbirth preparation classes. Anne Wright, the Patient Education Manager, welcomed the continued discussion of incorporating essential oils into different aspects of the birthing process.

The Cary Diaries: Cary Nose Best

March 13th, 2014

After a 45-minute boat ride across Lake Nahuel Huapi, Cary arrived at Victoria Island in Bariloche, Patagonia. It didn’t take her botanical nose long to determine that there were Eucalyptus trees growing somewhere close, and with that, she and her husband, Rick, were off on the hunt. They hiked along the 7-mile path towards the Arrayanes Wood; lo and behold, that sniffer was right. Mobdro About a half hour into the hike, Cary found what she was looking (or smelling) for.

Watch as Cary finds one of her all-time favorite trees:

Discovered by English Surgeon General John White upon his arrival in Australia in 1788, Eucalyptus was initially recognized for its olfactory properties. Mobdro APK Download But soon after, crude distillation of the tree’s leaves would produce an essential oil widely known throughout Europe for its antiseptic, antibacterial, anticatharral and sudorific properties, making it a common choice to treat most respiratory conditions. This oil uplifts, cools and cleanses the mind, body and home.

Eucalyptus oil can be found in our Immunity and Decongest blends.

The History of Aromatherapy

November 2nd, 2013

Nefertiti offers essential oils to Isis

This month, 21 Drops is celebrating the history of aromatherapy and essential oils, including the way they have impacted the creation of the 21 Drops Lifestyle. This all begins by embracing the word “aromatherapy” and what it means. Technically, it is using essential oils that are concentrated extracts that have been derived from the leaves, roots, blossoms, or seeds of various plants for medicinal purposes. These essential oils can be inhaled or massaged into the skin to receive the desired effects. But what more does aromatherapy mean, and where did it come from?

Much of the answer lies in the longevity of its use by human kind. Essential oils have been used for nearly 6,000 years by ancient cultures around the globe for their therapeutic properties. These oils have also been used by ancient Chinese, Indian, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman societies in perfumes, cosmetics, and as medicine. Essential oils were used regularly in other aspects of ancient life, such as therapy, spiritual guidance, hygiene, and in certain rites and rituals.

Aromatherapist, René-Maurice Gattefossé

Though aromatherapy and essential oils have shown their potent effects for thousands of years, it wasn’t until the early 1900s that they became a focal point for scientific study. For example, a French chemist by the name of René-Maurice Gattefossé realized that lavender had the ability to heal burns after applying it to his hand after an explosion in is lab. After analyzing the properties of the plant, he saw that there were many other uses for the essential oils produced from lavender that could treat a variety of wounds and damage to the skin. Gattefossé began what he called the science of aromatherapy.

The widely known benefits of aromatherapy and even the science and study of essential oils were not widely accepted in the United States until roughly the 1980s. It was at that point that many aromatherapy products became popular on the market including candles and lotions. Unfortunately, although labeled as aromatherapy, there were seldom any essential oils in the ingredients and they contained many artificial fragranced which have no therapeutic effect.

The Science and Benefits of Essential Oil Therapy in a Healthy Lifestyle

September 18th, 2013

998925_10151794847774241_1678692622_nHow can we live healthy, balanced lives in the midst of a toxic environment of sprayed foods, chlorinated water, polluted air and our busy modern lifestyle? Using essential oils can play an enormous role in enhancing a healthier, more balanced way of living.

When you understand that everything that happens on earth is a chemical reaction, it becomes very clear that we need to do everything we can, from having the purest food, water and air, to sustain a disease free and wholesome body.

Incorporating essential oils – the fragrant and highly concentrated molecules extracted from a plant’s leaves, fruits, woods, seeds and flowers – in our daily life can dramatically affect one’s health and wellness on a physical, emotional and mental level.

This science of understanding each unique essential oil’s specific effects on different body systems is how we begin to select which essential oils will compliment our individual needs.

Aromatherapy works most directly through the olfactory sense, but these active molecules can also be absorbed through the lung and the skin. When inhaled, the volatile aromatic compounds exert direct-to-brain actions through the limbic and autonomic nervous systems.

923434_10151574147179241_1134560570_nThis science of essential oil therapy is being validated more and more each day, with new statistical research data to validate the more holistic approach of using these plant-based remedies. It’s important to also note that more than 70% of our modern medicines come from having studied the use of plants by indigenous cultures around the globe.

Essential oils also provide the body with the necessary phytonutrients that our body utilizes through our endocrine system to monitor and regulate bodily systems. Not only do the oils help the physical ailments, but they work on our mental and emotional selves as well.

Whether one suffers from daily stress, sleepless nights, aches and pains, digestive problems, headaches or just about any ailment, there’s an essential oil or a combination of oils that can help counter and even alleviate one’s symptoms.
