How to Use Essential Oils Mindfully

Although essential oils smell pleasant to most, some people may have some sensitivity to particular scents or smells. Our essential oil expert and 21 drops founder, Cary Caster, explains how people can become sensitized to different scents.

• Overusing essential oils can cause people to develop a sensitivity or irritation to that particular scent over time. Therefore, you should use essential oils only as needed for therapeutic or curative use and moderately as a perfume.

 

• Essential oils are extremely concentrated and powerful in their actions and thus need to be diluted for safe application. If you aren’t diluting your essential oils at all or to a safe concentration in a carrier oil (coconut or jojoba) before applying it to your body, you can develop a sensitivity to that oil with repeated use and over exposure.

 

• Using essential oils too early (infants) is not recommended for the first 1-2 years of life. If absolutely necessary for a child 1-2 years of age you may dilute to a 0.5%  concentration in a carrier oil (coconut or jojoba) and only use gentle oils such as Roman Chamomile or Lavender for their concerns. Place the diluted oil in a place on the child’s body away from their eyes and mouth. Furthermore, it’s suggested that new mothers be mindful to not over scent themselves when handling their newborns.
