Ask Cary: Blend Application + GC-MS Testing

June 27th, 2014

We get all kinds of questions about essential oil therapy, and Cary makes sure to answer each and every one of them. Recently, we realized that those answers were only going to the person who asked the question. You know that at 21 Drops we believe that sharing is caring, so we decided to do a weekly roundup of some of the Q’s & A’s to help you be your best self!

This week: Blend Application + GC-MS Testing

Blend Application + GCMS Testing

Question: Where do I apply my blends?

Answer: It’s different for each blend, each one has specific instructions on its individual page and box. As a general rule you can apply them to pulse points (wrists, temples, back of the neck). Be sure to take a nice deep inhale to get those aromatic scent molecules flowing to the brain!

Question: Your packaging mentions GC-MS testing. What is that?

Answer: GC-MS stands for Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. This test identifies the active components in each oil and the quantities of each component. It will also reveal if there are any adulterations. It basically guarantees that our oils are as natural as we say they are. Adulterated oils will not offer optimal therapeutic effects and may cause allergies, headaches and chemical sensitivities, so we won’t use them in our blends.

Ask Cary: Multiple Blends + Allergies

June 20th, 2014

This week: Multiple blends + Allergies

Question: Can I apply more than one blend at a time?

Answer: Yes, you may layer them freely! I always use the analogy of eating fruits and vegetables: your body utilizes the phytonutrients it needs from all of the pure essential oils in the blends. They each have their characteristic functions that work synergistically together, so you’re all good to go. However, I don’t recommend using Invigorate or Focus two hours before bedtime- especially if you will be using Sleep, as these would conflict in their intended use.

Question: I need something for my sinus problems. I have a runny nose, watery eyes, etc. It is probably allergies. Do you have drops for this sort of problem?

Answer: Based on your symptoms, I recommend the Decongest blend. I created this blend with eucalyptus and black pepper oil to help clear the congestion that comes from allergies, sinus infections and colds. As far as preventing sinus problems in the future, the Immunity blend helps ward off cold and flu germs that may also be causing your symptoms!

Ask Cary: Scent + Breakups

Question: I’m very intrigued by these products and can’t wait to try them, but do they do double-duty? Could I use them as perfume as well? Or are the aromatics simply for the effects they have on your body?

Answer: Essential oils are very powerful healing tools on many levels. They are complex oils with many properties. While they may smell good, they do have other benefits. The essential oils we use in our blends are therapeutic quality, which provide both physiological and emotional benefits. What most people don’t realize is that while our therapeutic blends have beautiful scents, the scent will not last as long as a perfume because we do not use any additives in our products. Rather, the oils are meant to absorb quickly into the skin and get to work immediately. If you are looking for the most “fragrant” and uplifting blends, I recommend Strength, Passion, Equalize or Uplift.

Question: What would you recommend for a heavy heart? A recent breakup has left me feeling great loss and sadness.

Answer: I feel for you in your sadness. I knew that feeling all too well when I lost my mother 15 years ago. That was when I first created my Carry On blend. The oils in this blend really helped me to connect with my inner sadness, be ok with it, but then also supported me to move forward through that difficult time. That is the blend I would recommend for your situation.

Ask Cary: Carrier Oils + Anxiety

June 6th, 2014

We get all kinds of questions about essential oil therapy, and Cary makes sure to answer each and every one of them. Recently, we realized that those answers were only going to the person who asked the question. You know at 21 Drops we believe that sharing is caring, so we decided to do a weekly roundup of some of the Q’s & A’s to help you be your best self!

First up: Carrier oils and anxiety

Carrier Oils + Anxiety

Question: Do you use any carrier oils in your blends? Or do the vials contain only
essential oils? I have some nut allergies, so I wanted to make sure I wouldn’t have a problem.

Answer: Because essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin, all of our blends contain a synergy of 3-5 essential oils diluted in a 100% organic jojoba carrier oil. There are no other oils in our blends, so if you have nut allergies, there should not be an issue. Click here to learn more about our oils.

Question: I have anxiety when I ride the subway. What blend would your recommend? I checked out De-Stress, Calm and Equalize. They seem similar, what do you think?

Answer: I’d say your choice depends on your level of anxiety. If you feel extremely anxious, with a racing heart, muscle tension, and an overactive mind, then I’d recommend De-Stress. If you just get a bit uncomfortable and need to be calmed, I’d choose CalmEqualize is more about neutralizing the mind and has a soothing effect.

The Science and Benefits of Essential Oil Therapy in a Healthy Lifestyle

September 18th, 2013

998925_10151794847774241_1678692622_nHow can we live healthy, balanced lives in the midst of a toxic environment of sprayed foods, chlorinated water, polluted air and our busy modern lifestyle? Using essential oils can play an enormous role in enhancing a healthier, more balanced way of living.

When you understand that everything that happens on earth is a chemical reaction, it becomes very clear that we need to do everything we can, from having the purest food, water and air, to sustain a disease free and wholesome body.

Incorporating essential oils – the fragrant and highly concentrated molecules extracted from a plant’s leaves, fruits, woods, seeds and flowers – in our daily life can dramatically affect one’s health and wellness on a physical, emotional and mental level.

This science of understanding each unique essential oil’s specific effects on different body systems is how we begin to select which essential oils will compliment our individual needs.

Aromatherapy works most directly through the olfactory sense, but these active molecules can also be absorbed through the lung and the skin. When inhaled, the volatile aromatic compounds exert direct-to-brain actions through the limbic and autonomic nervous systems.

923434_10151574147179241_1134560570_nThis science of essential oil therapy is being validated more and more each day, with new statistical research data to validate the more holistic approach of using these plant-based remedies. It’s important to also note that more than 70% of our modern medicines come from having studied the use of plants by indigenous cultures around the globe.

Essential oils also provide the body with the necessary phytonutrients that our body utilizes through our endocrine system to monitor and regulate bodily systems. Not only do the oils help the physical ailments, but they work on our mental and emotional selves as well.

Whether one suffers from daily stress, sleepless nights, aches and pains, digestive problems, headaches or just about any ailment, there’s an essential oil or a combination of oils that can help counter and even alleviate one’s symptoms.

Summer’s Over! Time for Natural Cold and Flu Prevention and Treatment

September 13th, 2013

It’s that time of year when we put our bathing suits away and start bringing out the scarfs and jackets. These seasonal changes bring greater variations in the weather that cause the body’s natural defenses to be in flux. Thus it’s time to build up the immune system before the super bugs start to develop and take hold of us.

The natural way to avoid colds and flu starts with eating healthy, exercising, getting plenty of rest and drinking lots of water to keep the body functioning optimally. Try to stay on a schedule, keep healthy snacks handy and nourish all aspects of yourself. It turns out, prevention can go a long way to avoiding ever getting sick.

However, as the Fall “back to school” season and holiday mode starts to kick in, the obvious is not always as practical as we’d like. Of theses daily habits, rest is paramount because when we are tired and run down is when these opportunistic germs take hold! (#18 Sleep will aid a restful nights sleep) It’s also very important to schedule your day to incorporate “downtime” allowing the body and nerves to unwind. This keeps stress levels at bay will help adrenal glands from working overtime, which depletes the immune system’s ability to defend against germs.   (#11 De-Stress helps keep anxiety at bay!)

So what do you do at the first sign of a sniffle?

I immediately apply 21 Drops  #14 Immunity, a blend of Eucalyptus, Ravintsara, Rosewood and Lavender that are proven to defend against microbes and stimulate the white blood cells. Reducing dairy and sugar intake is also a must, as these effect the blood chemistry and actually aid mucus build up where microbial growth thrives. So it’s time to boost up your defenses and face those microbes head on, so you win the battle and stay top of your game!

The Cary Diaries: Part II – Wining and Dining

July 10th, 2013

We’re taking a peek into Cary Caster’s travel diary. And as the founder of 21 Drops, Cary brings her essential oil therapy along for the ride.

(If you missed it, catch up with Day 1 of Cary’s trip here!)

A new day of adventures in Spain!

Day 2

6:15 am

I’m tempted to sleep in, but our agenda today is jam-packed. We have so much more of this gorgeous country to see!

9:30 am

We take a tour at the Marques de Riscal winery. The 150-year old winery in the Rioja wine region produces some of the most extraordinary wines on the planet! My favorite – a dry red from 2005.

3:15 pm

As we learn more about the art and science of wine distillation, I am struck at how similar it is to working with essential oils. Both processes are thousands of years old and require the utmost care for a quality result. There are drugstore wines or award-winning ones – it all depends on the fine-tuned attention involved in every step of the way. It’s the same with essential oils. I have always put my heart and soul into assuring the utmost quality of the essential oils in 21 Drops to guarantee a high level of effectiveness.

7:40 pm

Did I mention today is my birthday? We enjoy a celebratory dinner at the winery’s restaurant. Headed by Michelin-starred chef Francis Paniego, our four-course meal was a gourmand’s dream! Needless to say I have my 04 Hangover and  17 Digest in hand for post-birthday blowout damage control!

Local grilled goat cheese with sautéed fungi salad. Out-of-this-world delicious!

Chao for now,

Cary

The Cary Diaries: Part I – Hola, España!

July 3rd, 2013

We’re taking a peek into Cary Caster’s travel diary. And as the founder of 21 Drops, Cary brings her essential oil therapy along for the ride.

Today is her first day in Spain:

7:00 am

Good morning, Madrid!

I can’t say I feel perfect after our 10-hour flight last night, but rolling on my favorite travel blends certainly helped. I use 14 Immunity every time I fly to protect against international germs and to make sure I stay healthy. I want to take advantage of every second in this beautiful country!

8:00 am

My husband, Rick, and I head to a nearby café to start the day off with a light breakfast. It’s 2:00 am our time and I’m struggling to stay awake. I ask the waiter for a café solo, and quickly change it to a doble. I’m thinking of requesting a café triple, but instead reach for my 01 Invigorate blend to keep me energized and ready to tackle today’s nonstop touring.

9:00 am

Today is all about art. Spain is home to many legendary artists like Picasso, Goya and Velázquez. We’re starting off with a visit to the Prado museum to check out their superb collection of classic paintings and sculpture.

1:00 pm

After hours of viewing art inside, we decide to spend some time taking a stroll outdoors. We feast our eyes on breathtaking Spanish gardens and magnificent old world architecture.

Just one example of the exquisite architecture throughout the city

3:00 pm

We’re compelled to check out the Reina Sofia – Madrid’s museum of modern art. Seeing famous works of Spanish masters Picasso and Dalí in person is such an inspiring experience.

7:30 pm

An informative (and extremely delicious) tapas and wine pairing tour. Of course, we both need our 17 Digest and 04 Hangover blends before turning in for the night!

We couldn’t get enough of these gourmet tapas — or 17 Digest!

10:20 pm

We wrap up the evening by watching a beautiful Flamenco performance. A perfect end to a perfect day. We’re exhausted.

Til tomorrow,

Cary
