Ask Cary: How Essential Oils Work + Fatigue

July 4th, 2014

We get all kinds of questions about essential oil therapy, and Cary makes sure to answer each and every one of them. Recently, we realized that those answers were only going to the person who asked the question. You know that at 21 Drops we believe that sharing is caring, so we decided to do a weekly roundup of some of the Q’s & A’s to help you be your best self!

This week: How Essential Oils Work + Fatigue

Ask Cary 7-4

Question: How do essential oils even work?

Answer: Essential oils can help alter our physical, mental and emotional well-being by triggering and strengthening our bodies’ own natural processes. They are made up of tiny molecules that can deliver healing properties to the systems that control our physiological state.

The best way for the body to absorb the therapeutic components of essential oils is a combination of inhalation through the olfactory system of the nose and absorption through the surface of the skin. When essential oils are inhaled through the nose, tiny nerves send an immediate signal to the brain and go straight to work on the systems that moderate our minds and bodies. When essential oils are applied to the skin, their healing components are absorbed into the bloodstream by the pores and hair follicles. Once inside the bloodstream, they disperse to the specific organs and systems on which they work. We suggest rolling our blends 5 times in a circular motion to the pulse points (inner wrists, temples, back of the neck) and then hold your wrists to your nose and inhale. Click here to learn more.

Question: I often find myself feeling fatigued. Can you recommend any blends to help me stay energized?

Answer: I recommend Invigorate and Focus to combat fatigue. Both of these blends contain Rosemary Oil, which is known to energize and strengthen mental activity. Invigorate is more of a body stimulant, while Focus aids in mental stimulation. The Cedarwood Oil in Invigorate increases strength and endurance, and the Peppermint Oil in Focus helps to awake and refresh.

5 Easy Ways to Chill Out This Summer

July 2nd, 2014
As the heat waves start rolling in, we begin to notice an excessive amount of energy in the air. This energy can make us feel restless.  We want to make the most of every beautiful day, so we start to over-work ourselves.

During the summer, our yoga practices naturally intensify and become more competitive.  However, due to the magnification of the weather and our practice, our bodies go out of whack and we feel anxious. Fortunately, there are a few ways to balance out this intensity in both the mind and body:

1. During this time of year, eat foods that are sweet, bitter, and astringent.  Avoid foods that are pungent and sour.

2. Don’t force change on your body. Meet yourself halfway. In your practice, start fierce like you want to, but then slowly start to cool the body down.  Incorporate wide-legged forward folds, and open stances to release energy and heat in your body. Extend your shavasana to at least 10 minutes.

3. Use essential oils. I love these 21 Drops blends: Equalize, Calm, and/or De-Stress.

4. Meditate in silence, and/or visualize cooling imagery, such as ocean waves or the blue sky.

5. Establish comfortable daily routines that allow time for self-care.
