Embrace your “Passion”

November 29th, 2012

If you had to name your greatest passion, what would it be?

It’s the thing that inspires you, that makes you feel completely at peace with the world. The thing that makes your life worth living.

It might be spending time with your kids or your pets (who, let’s face it, are basically like children!) It can be your morning run that sets the tone for the rest of your day or a long-awaited sabbatical in Paris.

To each and every person, passion means something else.

A person’s passion is what makes him or her unique. How someone chooses to spend their free time speaks volumes of them. The woman who carefully tends to her geraniums on a Saturday is kinda different than the guy who visits Star Wars conventions on weekend (understatement of the year…)

The funny thing, though, about what we love most, is that sometimes we let our passions fall to the wayside. Our jobs, our finances, our lives get in the way and we start living without enthusiasm, running on an empty tank, set to autopilot.

This holiday season, let’s celebrate passion. Let’s make a concerted effort to enjoy and delight in what brings us happiness. Our #06 Passion aromatherapy blend is designed to help engage the fire in us all. Blended from essential oils of jasmine, rose, cardamom and sandalwood, the Passion roll-on is designed to spark your passions and renew your excitement for what you love.

Try #06 Passion to revitalize your excitement for whatever it is that gets you out of bed in the morning – your dahlias, your Doberman, or… dressing as Darth Vader. It’s all good.

Tell us… what’s your greatest passion?

#13 Carry On: A Big Hug in a Little Bottle

November 23rd, 2012

The devastation that Hurricane Sandy caused still looms large for victims on the East Coast, who are still trying to rebuild their lives. 21 Drops founder, Cary Caster, responds to the trauma and offers a way to help.

My heart goes out to those whose lives were ravaged by Hurricane Sandy. Having been born and raised in Florida, I know first-hand the devastation that hurricanes can inflict.

I have tremendous compassion for the victims of Sandy and am striving to do whatever I can to help them pull through this difficult time. As a clinical aromatherapist, I understand the extraordinary healing power of essential oils.

I created the #13 Carry On blend when I lost my mother 15 years ago. Carry On is composed of select natural essential oils that especially help to heal heartbreak, manage loss and ease sorrow, while restoring our optimism in new beginnings. This specially selected aromatherapy oil synergy contains rose to heal the heart, lavender to soothe, frankincense to calm the mind, and sandalwood to support acceptance.

My #13 Carry On was designed to help out in critical times. I will donate 25% of each purchase of this healing blend to Habitat for Humanity, an international organization that helps those in need rebuild their homes after disaster strikes.

Let’s help our neighbors in need get their homes – and hope – back.

Super Headline: An Easy – and Healthy – Way to Supercharge Your Thanksgiving Menu (and Beyond!)

November 21st, 2012

Infuse your Thanksgiving feast – and your life – with plant extracts which often serve as spices. These not only taste great, they’re chock full of health benefits!

For The Bird – Add Rosemary

A member of the mint family, Rosemary is an herb with a distinctive aroma and piney flavor. This unique seasoning complements chicken, lamb and of course, turkey. In addition to its aromatic and savory qualities, rosemary is a boon to your health, too. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and mood elevating properties as well as functioning as a memory booster . Rosemary is an exceptional source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals; it is rich in folic acid, vitamin A, iron and potassium to name a few.

Try sprinking some of this herb on your Thanksgiving pièce de résistance. Or instead of using it on the turkey itself, you can also flavor the stuffing with rosemary.

Wondering how to get the benefits of rosemary without cooking up a storm? Try 21 Drops blends 01 Invigorate, 03 Strength and 09 Focus – each one contains natural rosemary essential oil!

For The Sides – Add Black Pepper

This good old standby spice is totally underrated. Made from ground peppercorns, black pepper is loaded with health benefits. This sharp, woody spice improves digestion and intestinal health, improves congestion, and stimulates the breakdown of fat cells in the body (!)

Black Pepper is simple to infuse into any savory side dish – put an extra dash on mashed potatoes, squash, roasted root veggies, or brown rice this Thanksgiving to add some zest and loads of antioxidants to your dinner.

Want to bring the power of pepper into your daily life? Roll on one of these 21 Drops blends 01 Invigorate, 15 Decongest or 21 Inspire – they all contain natural black pepper essential oil to make staying healthy a cinch!

For Dessert – Add Ginger

Looking for a great way to top off your Thanksgiving feast? Ginger is definitely the way to go. Made from the ginger root, ground ginger is fragrant, tangy and adds a unique spin to any dish its added to.

The health benefits of ginger are abundant, too. Traditional Chinese medicine has used ginger for thousands of years to cure and prevent various health problems. Ginger is used as a treatment for colds, migraines, nausea, and helps to assist in digestion (the perfect way to end a heavy holiday repast!)

Try adding a pinch of ground ginger to your standby holiday desserts for a unique flavor. Ginger is a marvelous accompaniment to apple pie, cheesecake and pumpkin pie (steal Cary’s mouthwatering pumpkin cheesecake recipe with ginger here!) You can also steep some ginger root in your tea to end off your meal and help aid in digestion.

Want the advantages of ginger when you’re out of the kitchen? 21 Drops essential oil blends 08 Pain Relief, 17 Digest, 19 Will Power, and 21 Inspire  contain all-natural ginger essential oil you can benefit from sans calories!

Do you have a favorite plant extract or spice? Tell us what it is in the comments!

We Heart Pumpkin: Thanksgiving Recipes You Can Feel Good About

November 16th, 2012

A simple way to uplift your Thanksgiving? Look no further than your Halloween jack-o-lantern!

Who doesn’t love the spirit of the holiday season? From October til December we cook, eat, gift, entertain, party, and shop until we drop – and we delight in it.

Yet in the midst of excessive consumption, it’s always nice to take a step back and simplify life a little.

Cary Caster, 21 Drops founder and natural-living enthusiast, has a unique holiday tradition that underlies the essence of Thanksgiving. Every year Cary saves her pumpkins from Halloween and uses their filling to make some delectable holiday dishes. Homemade pumpkin purée is healthier than using canned pumpkin pie filling and tastes really delicious, too. Cary also toasts the pumpkin seeds so no part of the winter squash goes to waste.

“Finding a new way to use your Halloween pumpkins is a great way to be resourceful,” says Cary of her yearly tradition, “every Thanksgiving I make a huge batch of pumpkin bread to share with friends and family. I even mail my toasted pumpkin seeds to my kids in college across the country!”

To make the pumpkin purée, Cary simmers the pumpkin on the stove with a cinnamon stick, clove and a bit of apple juice (to prevent burning and add flavor). After straining, it’s ready to use in recipes or can be frozen for future use.

Here Cary shares with us two of her favorite Thanksgiving pumpkin recipes.

Roasted Teriyaki Pumpkin Seeds

When you carve your Halloween pumpkin, be sure to remove and save the seeds for this special healthy treat. Pumpkin seeds provide many health benefits such as treating depression, preventing osteoporosis and lowering cholesterol!

¼ cup sesame oil

¼ cup teriyaki or soy sauce

½ tsp cinnamom

¼ tsp nutmeg

¼ tsp ground ginger

¼ tsp ground clove

¼ cayenne (if you like to add a little kick)

Cut opening at top of pumpkin and remove rows of seeds. Place in colander and rinse, removing any excess pulp.

In a medium bowl thoroughly mix all the ingredients.

Add clean rinsed pumpkin seeds into mixture and coat the seeds.

Preheat oven to 350 ‘

Lay out coated pumpkin seeds on a cookie sheet that has sides and place in the center of the oven

Every five minutes, remove sheet from oven and toss the seeds with a spatula to coat and toast all sides of the seeds.

Repeat until the seeds turn light brown and all the coating has dried.

Holiday Pumpkin Cheesecake

1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs

3 tbsp plus 1 cup sugar

1 tsp ground ginger

6 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

1 1/3 lb cream cheese, at room temperature

1 3/4 cup pumpkin puree, at room temperature

1 tsp finely grated orange zest

1 tbsp ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp ground cloves

1/3 tsp ground nutmeg

6 eggs, lightly beaten

Preheat an oven to 325°F. Position a rack in the middle of the oven. Cover the outside (bottom and sides) of a 9-inch springform pan with heavy-duty aluminum foil, shiny side out. Butter the inside of the pan and set aside.

In a bowl stir together the graham cracker crumbs, 3 tablespoons sugar and the ginger. Stir and toss together while gradually adding the melted butter. Continue to stir and toss until well mixed. Press the crumb mixture evenly over the inside of the pan to reach 1-3/4 – 2 inches up the sides. Chill for 30 minutes.

Place the room temperature cream cheese in a large bowl. Using an electric mixer set on medium speed, beat until no lumps are visible. Cream cheese should be light and fluffy. Slowly add 1 cup sugar while continuously beating; occasionally scrape down the bowl sides. Add the pumpkin, orange zest, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg and beat until smooth. Add the eggs, a little at a time, beating well after each addition and scraping down the bowl sides. Using a rubber spatula, stir slowly to dispel some of the air bubbles.

Pour the batter in the prepared pan and smooth the surface until it is flat. Bake until the top is lightly puffed all over, 60 – 70 minutes. The center may be slightly underset but it will firm up during cooling. Cool on a wire rack, then remove the foil and pan sides and refrigerate overnight. Before serving, you may want to carefully slip the chilled cake off the pan bottom and onto a large, flat serving plate, if you have one.

Yum – we can’t wait for Thanksgiving dinner! Now all we need is some # 12 Uplift to enhance the holiday spirit!

Surviving Sandy: One Woman’s Take on the Superstorm

November 15th, 2012

A short while ago, Hurricane Sandy ravaged the East Coast. Ella, a 21 Drops staffer and New Jersey resident, recounts how the storm affected her home, her family, and her life.

This is Ella’s story:

Photo courtesy of Brian Birke on flickr

He was nervously pacing up and down the halls, oblivious to everything around him. He was worried, flustered and anxious; he wished he could do something to help but he knew he had no part in this natural process.

The man in this scenario was my husband. And, NO, I’m not talking childbirth here. I’m talking natural disaster.

It was a Monday night and Hurricane Sandy was growing fiercer as it was hitting the shoreline of New Jersey – not so far from our Central NJ home. With a wife, a newborn and a young son, as well as his home to protect, my husband was more distraught than I had ever seen him. I was growing increasingly anxious as well. There’s something about a powerful storm that makes you realize just how powerless humans are. It’s seriously stressful.

The kids were terrified of the wind howling against our glass windowpanes. My husband and I were frantically trying to protect them, each other, and our home… at the same time listening to the horrific sound of large trees going down in the vicinity. Then, the lights went out. It was the most frightening hours of our lives.

The Aftermath:

Photo courtesy of Paul Lomax on flickr

Being centrally located, we did not, thank God, experience the full devastation of Sandy. But, devastating it certainly was. Life, as we knew it, was on hold. My husband was freaking out when he saw that we were surrounded by fallen trees, our newly installed fence was ripped out by merciless Sandy. I was watching the contents of my fully-stocked freezer spoiling while I was holding onto the baby and trying to assure my son that all was well.

Getting away to a more civilized place to ride it out was not an option. The storm had taken its toll on gasoline supplies. Mile-long lines at those gas stations who actually had electricity led to utter frustration as their supply ran out before your turn was even in view.

There was no going anywhere.

But, as I increasingly learned of the catastrophic experiences of fellow storm victims; losing homes, pets, property and valuables – it became clear that my family’s heartbreak paled in comparison. Suddenly, I felt petty for worrying about the small inconveniences of losing lights, power, cable, and internet, when more important things were left safe and sound, untouched by Sandy’s wrath.

Stress rears its ugly head during hard times, but when the situation is not life-threatening, it’s best to get the upper hand on stress.

Looking back, I could have dealt with the tense situation differently.

Instead of freaking out from the dark and toting utilitarian flashlights around, we could have lit some scented candles to create a more relaxed atmosphere.
Instead of fretting about food rotting in the powered-down freezer, we could have had an impromptu neighborhood barbeque.
Instead of frantically driving around looking for gas, we could have spent quality family time in our welcome, albeit chilly, home without the distractions of TV or internet.

Although I hope not to experience a second Sandy in my lifetime, if something like Sandy happens again, I’ll be more prepared. With lots of extra candles, a charged laptop, and a renewed appreciation for the important things in life. Oh, and I’ll be sure to remember to keep my 21 Drops #11 De-Stress blend in my emergency kit!

Thank you, Ella for sharing your experience with us. Did any of you experience Sandy first- hand? How did you cope with the stress brought on by the Franken-storm?
